“We need a cross-sectoral strategy to ensure sustainable education, research and lifelong learning opportunities across Europe.” - Tove Keldsen, Association of Nordic Engineers
Tove Keldsen serves as the Communication Manager for the Association of Nordic Engineers (ANE). ANE advocates for the pivotal role of engineers in driving the transition to a sustainable society, promoting sustainable education and lifelong learning policies.
What does the change you are trying to achieve look like? Why is the EU important?
At the Association of Nordic Engineers (ANE), we represent trade unions of engineers and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) professionals across the Nordic countries. These professionals are the backbone of innovation, technological advancement, and key to support the Green and Digital transition of our societies.
We are calling on policymakers to recognize and address the growing STEM skills gap. This requires prioritizing fundings and fostering a robust research environment, and tackling critical challenges such as climate change and digital transformation. Education and skills development are often seen as national responsibilities but the STEM skills shortage is a cross-sectoral issue that demands EU-level action. President Ursula von der Leyen’s commitment to a STEM Strategy in her recent agenda is promising, but we need a concrete, cross-sectoral strategy that unites stakeholders to ensure sustainable education, research funding, and lifelong learning opportunities across Europe.
Which challenges are you facing?
We are facing a persistent shortage of STEM talents, which threatens Europe’s digital and green transitions and its global competitiveness.
The Nordic countries, for example, offer highly attractive job markets that attract STEM professionals from across Europe. However, if the EU allows certain regions to lag behind, we risk undermining our collective efforts to achieve our green and digital ambitions. It is crucial that we address this imbalance to ensure that all regions can contribute to and benefit from these initiatives.
One tip you want to share with other public interest advocates?
When we speak with one Nordic voice we are heard. Make alliances. Building strong networks is crucial. Identify and connect with individuals and organisations that share your vision and goals. Collaboration across different sectors can amplify your impact and bring diverse perspectives to the table. Whether it’s partnering with NGOs, government bodies, private sector companies, or community groups, working together can lead to innovative solutions and greater influence.
